WILDCATS SINK CLAWS INTO KNIGHTS AT CASTLE
Latrobe doubles up Knights on senior night at Norwin....
SIx Knights were honored in all-Quad South Conference voting done by the league's coaches for their play this season.
Dylan Zgurich led the Norwin honorees by being selected as the second-team punter. In addition to his solid punting all season, Zgurich also a running back produced a pair of big runs on fake punts during the year.
The five other Norwin players selected all were chosen as honorable mentions. On offense, guard Quade Davis, center Dylan Keefer and wide receiver Luke Kljucaric were chosen, and on defense, linebacker Kenny Berryman was selected.
Latrobe's up-and-down season took a turn in a positive direction Friday night. The Wildcats rediscovered their ground game in a 28-14 win over Norwin at Norwin Stadium. Coach Ray Reitz's offense had not produced a 100-yard rusher all year — until last night, when Rob Vasinko and Richard Hall rushed for 154 and 122 yards. "We feel we were a lot better than we played all season," Reitz said. "I think tonight we played at least halfway to our capabilities." Latrobe's defense was also stout, sacking Norwin's Tommy Quealy six times. The Wildcats stopped Norwin twice on downs deep in Latrobe territory, keeping momentum on their side much of the evening. "I have a lot of respect for their coaching staff," Reitz said. "That is a young team that might be a bit too young." Latrobe struck first with a 10-play, 33-yard drive that spanned the first and second quarters. Quarterback Logan Carns capped the surge with a 1-yard TD run. The Wildcats made it 14-0 midway through the second when Vasinko ended a 45-yard march with a 9-yard scoring run. Latrobe took a three-score lead early in the fourth. After stopping the Knights on fourth-and-goal, Hall busted an 80-yard run for a score. "That was huge on their part," Norwin coach Art Tragesser said. "We drive down there, get stopped and they break a big one." Norwin climbed back into the fray when Quealy found Luke Kljucaric for a 69-yard touchdown. The Knights recovered the subsequent onside kick but again were turned away on downs deep in Latrobe territory. Latrobe clinched the win with an 81-yard march that Vasinko capped with a 4-yard run. Norwin ended the scoring when Dylan Zgurich rumbled in from 18 yards.

Coming off its first conference loss of the season, McKeesport bounced back with a dominating performance. Both teams played without key offensive players. The Tigers were without senior running back Donte Patterson because he violated a team rule, and the Knights (0-7, 0-4) were missing senior quarterback Tommy Quealy, who did not travel with the team due to illness. Junior Cody Sabol filled in for Quealy and completed 10 of 25 passes for 81 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown pass to Luke Kljucaric in the fourth quarter. "I think Cody really did a nice job," Norwin coach Art Tragesser said. "He was under a lot of pressure. That was his first start -- he's usually our JV starter -- and I was pleased with how he did." The Knights will host Latrobe next Friday night at the castle..

Although it was Norwin's best half of football, it was not enough for the Knights to earn their first win of the season. It took the host Knights 24 minutes of play to get untracked Friday evening, unfortunately for coach Art Tragesser's squad, the hole was too deep to overcome, as Hempfield used two turnovers and an opportunistic offense to earn a 24-14 win at Norwin Stadium. The Knights will travel to Monroeville next Friday evening to take on the Gators of Gateway at Antimarino Stadium.

All players must bring Navy Blue shorts and a Norwin T-shirt to wear to Lunch on Monday. Camp runs Monday-Friday 7am-5pm. Saturday boys report at 8:45am, and scrimmage begins at 10am.
Immediately following the scrimmage will be our annual Kick-off picnic. The Kick-Off picnic is for players, trainers, managers and their families in 7th-12th grade. We also need some parents to help with setup, serving, and cleanup, if you can please volunteer. With YOU there would be no boosters to supply the team with so much!! Thanks to all who help with so much! You are appreciated!!
Good Luck in the 2011 Season!!
